SMS hubbing allows the growth of international SMS with the trials launched in 2006 as a part of the Open Connectivity project. It helps restructure international mobile interoperability by instating hubs for intermediate traffic and providing larger SMS coverage.

The international SMS interoperability structure was created by GSMA along with developing requirements and standards for SMS hubs. This ensures that each subscriber is able to send an SMS to other subscribers without any restrictions of country, mobile network, number of subscribers or maturity of the operator.
